Matthew Galkin founded Fairhaven in January of 2018 and quickly went into production on the Five-part Showtime documentary series MURDER IN THE BAYOU (Director/Executive Producer), based on the NY Times best-selling book. The series is Showtime’s first-ever true crime documentary series. In the spring of 2019, Fairhaven and partner IPC began production on the forthcoming EMPIRES OF NEW YORK, a six-part limited series for CNBC about New York City’s financial and cultural resurrection in the 1980’s.
Galkin has directed three documentary films – HBO’s KEVORKIAN, a multi-faceted biography of famed assisted-suicide activist Jack Kevorkian; the award-winning HBO documentary I AM AN ANIMAL: THE STORY OF INGRID NEWKIRK AND PETA, about the controversial animal rights group and it’s enigmatic founder; and loudQUIETloud: A FILM ABOUT THE PIXIES, an immersive verite film chronicling the 2004 reunion tour of the seminal rock band.
Prior to starting Fairhaven, Galkin was a partner at New York-based production company Warrior Poets, where his work included the award-winning CNN series INSIDE MAN (Executive Producer/Showrunner), which won the 2013 IDA Award for Best Limited Series; SUPER SIZE ME 2: HOLY CHICKEN! (Producer); ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US (Executive Producer), the ESPN Films 30 for 30 documentary THE DOTTED LINE (Producer and Writer); and COMIC-CON EPISODE IV: A FAN’S HOPE (Producer).
Galkin’s other work includes the documentary anthology series CULTURESHOCK for A&E (Executive Producer); FAMILY BONDS for HBO (Producer); KIMORA: LIFE IN THE FAB LANE FOR E! (Co-Executive Producer); BOOMTOWN for Planet Green (Co-Executive Producer) which won the 2011 IDA Award for Best Limited Series; the award-winning web series A DAY IN THE LIFE for Hulu (Director/Co-EP); and the twice Webby-nominated series FAILURE CLUB for Yahoo! (Director).
Cafritz has been working on the development side of unscripted television for the last decade. After starting out with the programming team at History Channel, he quickly jumped over to production companies including Half Yard Productions, Leftfield Pictures and Original Media. While he learned invaluable development skills during that stretch, it was not until he became Director of Development at Warrior Poets that he found his passion for documentaries.
Matthew has been a part of over ten straight to series sales in development including ALONE on History Channel, CULTURESHOCK on A&E and MURDER IN THE BAYOU on Showtime. Cafritz originally found Ethan Brown’s book MURDER IN THE BAYOU and pitched it to Galkin. It was this project that truly drove his passion for the space and as VP of Development at Fairhaven, his goal is to develop many more like it.
